When should you sterilise baby bottles?

Sterilise bottles, teats, caps, breast pump parts and any equipment that comes into contact with milk before their first use. After that, it is generally recommended to sterilise feeding equipment until your baby is at least 12 months old.

This matters most when using formula, as powdered formula is not sterile. If your baby was born prematurely, has a health condition or has a weakened immune system, speak with your midwife, health visitor or paediatrician about the routine that is right for them.

How to sterilise baby bottles with steam

Steam sterilising is a popular everyday choice because it is quick, chemical-free and straightforward. You can use an electric steam steriliser or a microwave steriliser, depending on the space you have and the bottle types you use.

Electric steam sterilisers

Arrange clean, dismantled bottle parts as directed by the appliance manufacturer. Most systems need a measured amount of water in the base and use steam to sterilise the equipment in a short cycle. Keep the lid closed after the cycle finishes. When unopened, many units keep items sterile for several hours, but always follow the instructions for your model.

Electric sterilisers are especially useful for households preparing several bottles a day. They can also handle compatible pump parts, dummies and small feeding accessories, helping keep one practical station organised on the kitchen worktop.

Microwave sterilisers

Microwave sterilisers are compact and convenient, particularly for smaller kitchens or travel. Add the specified amount of water, place the cleaned items inside without overcrowding, and microwave for the recommended time based on your appliance wattage.

Take care when opening the lid, as escaping steam can be very hot. Allow the unit to cool as instructed before removing contents. Never microwave metal parts, and always check that your bottles and accessories are suitable for microwave steam sterilising.

Sterilising bottles by boiling

Boiling is a reliable low-cost method when you do not have a steriliser. Fill a large, clean saucepan with enough water to cover all bottle parts. Bring the water to a rolling boil, then carefully add the dismantled equipment using clean tongs.

Keep the items submerged and boil for the amount of time recommended by the bottle manufacturer. Teats may need less time than bottles, as prolonged boiling can cause them to deteriorate faster. Do not let plastic parts rest against the bottom or sides of a very hot pan if this could cause damage.

Boiling is useful as a back-up method, but it requires a little more attention. You will need to watch the pan, keep the pieces fully covered and allow them to cool safely. Check bottles and teats more frequently if you boil-sterilise regularly.

Items usually need to remain in the solution for a set period before they are ready to use. The solution must be changed at the stated interval, and the container should stay covered. This method can be particularly helpful for travelling, visiting family or managing feeds where a microwave or hob is not readily available.

Use the solution exactly as directed. The right dilution and contact time matter. Some products allow equipment to be used straight from the solution, while others have specific instructions, so avoid adding an extra rinse unless the label advises it.

Drying and storing sterilised bottles safely
